Stock market trading hours and schedule

Understanding stock market hours on holidays is essential for successful trading. The market operates on a specific schedule, and holidays can significantly impact when you can trade, how markets behave, and what strategies work best.

This comprehensive guide covers regular market hours, holiday schedules, early closures, and how to effectively plan your trading around holidays.

Regular Stock Market Hours

On normal trading days (Monday through Friday, excluding holidays), the stock market operates on the following schedule:

Regular Trading Hours

On these days, no regular trading occurs, and pre-market and after-hours trading are also unavailable.

Early Market Closures

The market closes early (at 1:00 PM ET) on these days:

Day Before Thanksgiving

The market closes at 1:00 PM ET on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. This is a regular early closure that occurs every year.

Christmas Eve (if weekday)

If Christmas Eve falls on a weekday, the market typically closes at 1:00 PM ET. If it falls on a weekend, there is no early closure.

Trading Strategies Around Holidays

Holidays can create unique trading opportunities and challenges:

  • Reduced volume: Trading volume often decreases before holidays, which can lead to increased volatility
  • Position management: Many traders close positions before long weekends to avoid overnight risk
  • News accumulation: When markets reopen after holidays, there may be significant moves based on news that occurred during the closure
  • Options expiration: Be aware that options expiration dates may be adjusted around holidays

Tips for Trading Around Holidays

  • Always check the market calendar before placing time-sensitive trades
  • Be aware of early closures that might affect your trading strategy
  • Consider reduced liquidity in the days leading up to holidays
  • Plan for potential gaps when markets reopen after holidays
  • Use limit orders instead of market orders when volume is low
